Winchester Cathedral has been a living place of worship and welcome for over 900 years. It welcomes 300,000 visitors annually, including pilgrims, tourists, families and school groups from across the country and overseas.
You’ll discover one of the finest medieval cathedrals in Europe, with a captivating history and magnificent architecture. Don’t miss the new National Lottery Heritage Funded exhibition 'Kings and Scribes: The Birth of a Nation', which explores 1,000 years of history and reveals some of the Cathedral’s greatest treasures, including the 900 year old Winchester Bible, commissioned by the grandson of William the Conqueror in 1160.
It's worth looking out for the cushions and kneelers designed in 1931 by Louisa Pesel, the notable embroiderer, whose making is described in the 2019 book ‘A Single Thread’ by Tracey Chevalier.
Like many other cathedrals, it charges visitors an admission fee for entry, which helps to defray its maintenance and running costs. When you buy an entry ticket, you’re eligible to visit as often as you like for 12 months. Your visit also helps to support the work of the Dean and Chapter. The Cathedral receives no funding from State or Church so it is reliant on the contributions made by its congregation, community and visitors.
Adult: £9.95, Concessions (which presumably include seniors): £8.00

Winchester Christmas market
The Winchester Christmas Market helps over 30 charities, 120 small independent retailers, suppliers, local businesses and the cathedral to generate much needed income. While many are depending on the Christmas Market to support their livelihoods, of equal importance is our hope to provide a source of enjoyment for Winchester and its residents during the festive period, at the end of what has been an extremely difficult year for many.
Winchester is one of the most festive cities in Europe and the town continues to explore options to ensure that it brings Christmas cheer, to everyone, in new and creative ways.
